Packaging and Labeling Subcommittee (PALS)
Formed in 2011, the Packaging and Labeling Subcommittee provides advice and technical guidance to the Laws and Regulations Committee. It serves to improve technical expertise, develop model standards, and respond to difficult questions of interpretation or application of model laws and regulations and how the correlate with federal laws.
Specifically, the subcommittee is responsible for developing items for the Packaging and Labeling Regulation and Method of Sale Regulation in NIST Handbook 130 and the test procedures for checking the net contents of packaged goods found in NIST Handbook 133. The charge of the subcommittee is to:
- Regularly review NCWM agenda items and draw on industry expertise to form consensus positions for advancement during open hearings of NCWM.
- Discuss current issues and new trends in the marketplace and develop proposals to address them in the model standards.
- Serve as a resource for the Laws & Regulations Committee to develop items and provide expertise.
- Report directly to the Laws and Regulations Committee in open hearings of the NCWM and throughout the standards development process.
Subcommittee membership is open to public members, representatives of industry involved in packaging and marketing consumer products, and technical advisors. The subcommittee typically meets twice a year in conjunction with NCWM Interim and Annual Meetings. These meetings open to NCWM members or other registered parties.
